Um, hi I've been using this tutorial and it's been very helpful but I can't find "overlay" anywhere. Where is it? >.<

In the layers dialog box (Ctrl+L to show it) find the drop-down menu for the Layer Mode. By default, it says "Normal". There's others, like Screen, Overlay, Subtract, Multiply, etc. Hope that helps

You need to separate the lines from the colouring onto different layers, try using my "Separating Lineart with the GIMP" tutorial :)

Um... Having a bit of trouble finding where the shadows are supposed to be. Whats the easiest way to get around that?
I mean, whats the easiest light point to go from?

It might help you to study shading and shadows in general first like [link] or just have a look at how other people do it and try to understand the shading used. A simple light to do is one that is in front of the character but off a bit to the side, so the light is coming diagonally down onto the character; shade the sides that aren't facing the light darker, and the sides closest to the light lighter.

As I said it's important to understand light and shading because if you do it wrong it will look out of place and won't look 3D.

But with proper shading you can make vivid shapes [link]
