ok I have a few questions,I'm using a penciled lineart (not inked) to color with gimp:

1.what do the ink layers do? I see them in the tutorial and it does'nt really explain them..is it something that's important?

2.on the "Change FourGround Colour" it says with a value between 45-55 but not 50...and yours is set to 50 that part is kinda throwing me off..is your"Change FourGround Colour" illustration supposed to look like mine?

3.is the background layer supposed to be set to transparent or white before you fill it in with the gray?

Thanx=)

1. The ink layers are not necessary, if you want to use the pencil layers, you can separate them so that you have the lineart on a separate layer (see my separating tutorial) But I do recommend that you re-ink penciled lineart.

2. I only remembered its better not to be on 50 afterwards. It's not too big a deal, but stick with like 45.

3. It doesn't matter, it will be filled/overwritten.

Excellent Tutorial!
Do you have to create a separate layer for shading?

Quick answer, yes allows freedom, no if you're pro

Long answer, you can use one or the other or both interchangeably depending on what you plan to do.

That's good, I used a separate layer for mine. Thanks! :thumbsup:

i love it! but i have a question. It might sound stupid, but i still want an answer. Can you save during the process? It always tells me to flatten it. Is there no other ways to keep all of my layers separate?
:icontgfcoder:
No, that's probably the smartest question I've heard. I forgot to mention it, being me, lol, and the answer is: yes, save it as .XCF (GIMP's native format, like PhotoShip's .PSD.) which will save all the layers and stuff.

When you're happy with it, you can "export" it to another format, like JPG or PNG. You can't get the layers back if you do that, so it might be a good idea to keep your XCF files until you really don't need them.

I'm having a really hard time coloring my image using the different layers. It's not your instructions I'm sure. Their very detailed. But Can you explain how to put the colors in each layer but still have that checkered box in the Layers dialog? Also I'm trying to figure out how to put each color into each layer. Whenever I try the color I've chosen doesn't let me color but instead colors the box of the layer. I'm also having a hard time with selecting the layer I want to use. If you can help I would be very grateful
