"How to make advanced selections with Quickmasking"

Another tutorial! If you like it or use it, **please** comment! It only
takes two seconds. Faves are appreciated too!

You might still be able to benefit from this if you're using Photoshop too, leaning about selections!

Edit: made some spelling and capitalisation mistakes. It's not even sunrise yet,
so that's my excuse. If you spot any more, please note me.

It has come to my attention that the use of the Quick Mask is unclear.
Firstly, making any kind of selection does not just have one use, because it's
what you do with the selection that determines what you are using it for.
Hence, the quickmask is useful for everything.
But when is quickmasking better than normal selections?
When you need to select a complex and/or precise shape (such as around an arbitrary object), quickmasking can be better for
the job, and make life easier. A few examples are: Removing a background
from a photo, [link] provides a great example! Quickmasking also shows you clearly what is selected, which is handy when you have a lot of very small selections active (such as with Select by Colour or Fuzzy Select)

Quickmasking can also give you a good idea of how the selected portion
looks with less distraction from the surrounding area.

It's all about learning to use the tools before you need them, because then it's too late ;P

wow, kinda unclear right now how I would apply this but I must think about it for future reference just in case I get really into it or something. I always have problems trying to select images from anime - and end up lassoing instead of quick selects as it never grabs what I want.

GIMP definitely is a contender for the title. I am making the switch from Photoshop to GIMP. So far GIMP does everything I need it to do.

well, I certainly commend you for even trying to explain the selected-ness thing. Is there a way to flip it like in photoshop? What I'm wondering is if you can set it to show red where it is SELECTED rather than where it is MASKED?

You can invert (flip) the selection with CTRL+I. You can't do this in quickmask mode, so go out of it, flip it, then go back in (and it'll show you the part that you mean to select in red.)
