Separating Lineart in The GIMP by tgfcoder Separating Lineart in The GIMP by tgfcoder
"How to properly separate lineart for colouring and such in The GIMP"

EDIT: It may be useful to know that "Color" has its own menu now, and you can find Color to Alpha under there rather than in Filters. Thanks!

My second tutorial! If you like it or use it, **please** comment! It only
takes two seconds. Faves are appreciated too!

You could still be able to benefit from this if you're using Photoshop too!

NOTE: For those who might think (or think that I think) that this tutorial is the be-all and end-all, that is false. This tutorial only shows one or some of my methods to utilise The GIMP's tools, and no doubt can be bettered. Think of it as a stepping stone for beginners; if you don't know where to start, how can we improve? Thanks for viewing my tutorial and I hope it gives you ideas for your own style.

All suggestions and criticism are welcomed. It is not too late to change it either.
For any notification of mistakes, improvements, or something otherwise only needing to be read by me, do not comment it, note me. If you have questions; note me.

Thankyou for reading.

OMG I never knew this was possible!!!!  thx for sharing!! (You can also color by setting the color layer on multiply but then all the coloring will have to be on the same layer and coloring the lineart is not possible <--what I used so far) Can't wait to try this out!

thanks for the tutorial, it worked for one of my linearts, but ITS BEING SUCH A PAIN for the other half of it ; w ; and ive tried saving it as multiple files, jpg, gif, png, psd, they all show up with a white background on sai, and i cant colour properly knowing that the lines will blend in or that ill have to go to the pain of lowering the opacity levels. :C maybe word's remove background thingo will work..

This is great even though it doesn't work for me. I can get my lines separated but my inking jobs suck so much I cant use them in a final piece unfortunately. But I will pass this on for sure, this is great~

I have a question and sorry to ask... but what if i scan my drawings that have been colored by pencil crayons or such and I dont want to remove the color but still need to have a clean background? Im new to using gimp but I dont want to remove the effort i made with the coloring i already did before scanning...

I prefer keeping my traditional lineart, but I like coloring digitally/adding effects in GIMP, so now I can have both =)
I have to try this method out!

This. Is. SO. SO. SO. helpful, even 5 years down the line. I freaked out a little upon not finding colors, and then realized it was in its own menu (derp). And my lineart was colored (wanted to do the background some filters digitally), but somehow that wasn't an issue!

Thanks!

Which version of GIMP do you have? Your images look slightly different than the version I've got, which I only downloaded a month or two ago. I suspect it's because I had to download the version for OSX instead of Windows.

This tutorial is almost 5 years old. It was the latest version at the time (2.3 or something, Windows.)
